China 1983

In 1983 I went to China after hearing that the Chinese had opened Tibet for individual travellers. A big sign on the wall of the embassy in Hong Kong made it clear this was not any longer the case. Later I learned the Chinese had closed Tibet again, embarrassed by a book comparing photos from before and after the cultural revolution of numerous temples and monastries in Tibet, which looked like they were bombed by this disastrous exercise.
As an alternative I asked stamps for cities in Inner-Mongolia and Uyghuristan in the North-West, to check out the Turkish-speaking peoples living there.

If you want to go there fast, take the wormhole to that page, click: Uyghuristan

All curious to see the foreigner, but communication difficult as nobody spoke English. One had a book of 'Follow Me', but didn't speak a word. I taught him his first words..... time enough on the days long train rides.
